ICTroom builds data centre in Germany for Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR) and the City of Cologne

Complete "Data Centre as a Service (DCaaS)" solution with a contract term of at least 20 years

PRESS RELEASE

Cologne / Munich, June 27th, 2017

ICTroom has been awarded the contract for the planning, construction, financing, maintenance and operation of a joint data centre for the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR) and the City of Cologne within the framework of a public, Europe-wide tender.

Planning, construction, financing, maintenance and operation in one contract

In 2015, the decision was made: the LVR-Haus at Ottoplatz 2, built in 1966, opposite the Deutz-Messe station, will be demolished and replaced by a new building. The demolition is to take place in the first half of 2019. This decision also has a significant impact on the IT of the association, which is largely accommodated in the computer centre integrated into this building.

After weighing up the various models for the construction and operation of a data centre, LVR, together with its IT provider LVR-InfoKom, decided for a Data Centre as a service (DCaaS) solution. Sub-tenant in the new location Köln-Kalk will be the city of Cologne, which already operates a computer centre in Cologne-Chorweiler, where LVR-InfoKom is the sub-tenant.

Within the timefame of a year, the most suitable partner for a new, highly secure, highly-available but at the same time also highly efficient data centre was searched within the framework of a Europe-wide tender. Special requirements were included, especially in respect of the selection of land, since the new data centre should be protected from flooding of the river Rhine, and situated within a reasonable distance from the second data centre site and connected to existing network infrastructure.

In addition to fulfilling all the required performance criteria, the concept presented by ICTroom proved to be a technically very robust and efficient solution. In addition, ICTroom's experience with the "Data Centre as a Service (DCaaS)" concept with several references added value for LVR as well.

With DCaaS, ICTroom offers an interesting alternative in IT sourcing considerations. DCaaS provides the user with a single tennant data centre, tailored to their specific needs, without the significant initial investments that are normally required. In addition, DCaaS typically relieves the IT organization of the highly specialised work and responsibilities associated with the operation of a data centre and its technical building equipment and places it in the hands of the experienced team of ICTroom’s data centre experts.

The construction work for the building will commence in the second half of 2017, and the installation of the technical building equipment will begin in the spring and summer of 2018. The data centre is to be handed over in the autumn of 2018. The contract for the rental of the data centre and its operation has a duration of 20 years, but can also be extended by LVR.
